Chapter 8: The Dinner
Dario Bellacosta had eaten at this table every Sunday of his life until he was twenty-eight.
Nothing in the dining room in Beverly had changed.
The same white cloth, the same heavy forks, the same portrait of his grandmother in her black dress staring down at the roast.
His father sat at the head with a napkin tucked into his collar, carving.
He carved the way he did everything, slowly, so that the room had to wait.
"Eat," said Gaetano.
Dario took a bite he couldn't taste.
At the far end sat his cousin Ignazio, lean in his charcoal suit, turning a wine glass by the stem and smiling at nothing.
Beside him, with his tan windbreaker hung on the back of his chair, sat Russ Odom.
The Marshal's collar was damp.
He had been sweating through his shirt since Dario walked in, and he ate like a man who knew it was on the menu.
