Chapter 17: Brady Talks

Dane had his jeans up and his shirt in his fist before the door finished swinging.

He went past me without a sound, off the end of the stage and through the curtain into the back room, and I heard the cooler door seal behind him.

I knew he would not come out until I said the word.

We had agreed on it in the truck.

I dragged my shirt down and shoved my feet into my boots.

I had no time for the bra.

I kicked it under the piano.

When Brady's boots crossed onto the dance floor I was standing at the front of the stage with my arms crossed and my braid hanging over one shoulder.

I was flushed from my collar to my hair.

I decided to let him think it was nerves.

"There she is," Brady said.

He stopped twenty feet away and spread his hands.

He wore the company polo and pressed jeans, and his hair was shellacked into its usual spikes.

He looked clean and sunny and glad to see me.

I thought: I used to think that face was kind.

"You're early," I said.

"You're early too," he said.

"I wanted to beat the heat.

"Come here, Katrina.

"Come here, babe."

"I'll stay where I am."

He laughed, easy and hurt.

"Okay.

"Okay, I get it.

"I was a jerk.

"I know I was.

"That text was the worst thing I've ever done to a person."

"It wasn't the worst thing," I said.

"Katrina."
