Chapter 14: The Thursday

"Okay," I said.

It was the only word I had.

The captain looked at me like she'd been braced for a slap and didn't know what to do without one.

"Okay?" she said.

"I'm going to need pancakes for this," I said. "Do you want pancakes?"

Kenzie made a sound that was half a sob and half a laugh.

Gretchen pulled up out front twelve minutes later in her hatchback, in pajama pants and a parka, with the hazards on.

She took one look at the three of us coming down the hotel steps.

Me in green satin. Kenzie in silver with mascara to her chin. A tall girl in black, carrying her shoes.

"I have so many questions," Gretchen said. "Get in. Nobody talk until there's syrup."

The all-night diner by the bus station had orange booths and a waitress who'd seen everything and wasn't impressed by any of it.

We took the corner booth.

Gretchen ordered for the table without asking anyone.

The captain sat with her back to the wall and her hands around a coffee mug.

"He told me you cheated first," she said to me.

I put down my fork.

"He said it was a guy from your clinicals. A male nurse. He said you'd been sleeping with him since Christmas and he only stayed with you because of the lease and the campaign."
