Chapter 29: Friday's Decision
Joelle's POV
On Monday morning the chairman called the whole Lakeview floor into the lobby.
Two hundred people stood between the elevators and the glass doors with their coffee cups.
Maud held my elbow with both hands.
"He's going to fire you in front of everyone," she whispered. "Or he's going to promote you. I can't tell which, and I've never been so excited."
"Breathe, Maud."
"I'm breathing in the direction of drama."
Ivo stood a few feet away with his hands in his pockets.
He had not touched me since we came through the doors.
We had spent the weekend at the lake house with our phones off, sleeping in until noon.
Here he was my team lead, and he kept his eyes on the carpet.
I loved him for it, and I wanted to kick him.
The chairman climbed onto the reception desk with his pen in his fist.
"Good morning," he said. "I'll be short."
"Last week, a friend of mine telephoned me twice about a member of this staff."
The floor went very quiet.
"He told me she was unstable. He told me she was carrying on with her boss. I owe that man twenty years of dinners."
Nobody moved.
"This morning he called a third time. He told me he was withdrawing eleven million dollars from our shareholders' register."
A gasp ran around the lobby.
"I said thank you," the chairman said. "I said I preferred the staff."
Maud squeaked.
"Ms. Brandish."
"Yes, sir."
"Come up here."
I walked to the desk.
He gave me his hand and I climbed up beside him, in my work flats, in front of two hundred phones.
"I made my inquiries," he said. "I called the Marlow Foundation. I called the Newford police. I called the former HR director of the Newford office, who talked for forty minutes."
