I stared at the message for a long time.
Part of me wanted to put the phone face down and finish my dinner.
Let him find out on his own. Let it be somebody else's problem.
Then Kayleigh laughed at something Preston said.
It was the same laugh she used at the hallway mirror in Columbus.
I typed a message.
"Come to Rosetti's."
I put the phone away and picked my fork back up.
Connor lived four minutes away.
He made it in three.
The bell rang hard enough to rattle.
He came in with snow in his hair and no coat, just a hoodie.
He looked at me first, in the corner booth.
Then he followed my eyes to the fireplace.
Kayleigh was leaning her head on Preston's shoulder.
Connor stood there.
He didn't say anything at all.
The whole restaurant felt it. The waitress stopped at the kitchen door.
"V," he said.
Kayleigh sat up so fast her wine glass tipped.
Red spread across the tablecloth.
