Chapter 13: Westmere

I read it three times under the streetlight.

"What did you tell her?" I typed.

"Nothing. I said I didn't know. She didn't believe me."

Malik took my hand.

"We change the hotel," he said. "Tonight."

We did.

Dr. Farragut booked us into a different place under her own name, a little inn two blocks from campus with creaky stairs.

We didn't tell anyone. Not even the lab's group chat.

We drove to Massachusetts the day before finals.

Eleven hours in the lab van, Brody's playlist, Kelsey quizzing us on judge questions.

The canvas tote rode on my lap the whole way.

Westmere looked exactly like the brochures.

Old brick buildings. Clock tower. Trees just starting to bud.

A year ago I would have cried to be here.

I walked across the main quad with the tote on my shoulder.

Connor was sitting on the steps of the library.

He stood up when he saw me.

He looked thin. His hair needed a cut. He wore the same navy varsity jacket.

"You came," he said.

"I told you I would."

He glanced at Malik, who'd stopped a few feet back.

"Can I talk to her alone?"

Malik looked at me.

I nodded.

He walked to a bench within earshot and sat down, facing us.

Connor shoved his hands in his pockets.

"I'm going to do it tomorrow," he said. "I'm going to stand up and tell them everything. The emails. December. All of it."
