Chapter 10: Through the Gate
Brett came to the gate on the fifth day with a pawnshop ring and a story, and I walked down the drive alone to hear it.
Toby had asked me not to.
He stood at the window of the great room with a mug in his hand and watched the car come up the county road, a silver Civic I knew by the dent in the fender.
"Let the men turn him around," he said.
"No," I said.
"He sold you."
"I know what he did. I was in the van."
"Then why?" Toby said.
"Because I want to hear what he says when he thinks I'm alone."
I pulled on the parka and walked the mile in the snow with my breath going out in front of me.
Two of Toby's men stood on the inside of the open gate with their arms folded, and a third stood across the road.
Brett had gotten out of the car and stood on the gravel shoulder in a quarter-zip fleece and the loafers I had bought him.
He looked terrible.
His face was gray, he hadn't shaved, and his eyes were pink.
"Iris," he said, and his whole face crumpled with relief. "Oh my God. You're okay."
"I'm fine," I said, and heard myself say it, and almost laughed.
"They told me you'd be fine, I swear. They said nobody would touch you. Lars said it. I didn't know it was him behind it. I thought it was a rich guy. Some old guy."
"You thought it was an old guy," I said.
"I thought you'd stay in a nice place and just, you know. Be there."
"Be there."
"For a year," Brett said. "And then it'd be over, and we'd be even, and I'd pay you back."
He took a ring out of his pocket and held it up.
