Chapter 13: Mother's Offer

My mother's hands went still on my face.

"Say that again," she said.

"No," I said. "I won't kneel. I won't marry him. And I won't let you rule anything."

She took her hands away slowly.

The warmth went out of her face, and what was under it was a stranger's.

"You are eighteen," she said. "You have been a wolf for two days. You do not know what you are refusing."

"I know he shot my father."

"Your father threw me out like a servant."

"Then you should have come to the Moonhall and said so to his face. Not sent a boy with a gun."

Dorian made a sound in his throat.

"Careful," he said. "She's not your mother anymore, Rhiannon. She's your queen."

I turned and looked at him.

"Your father disowned you in front of three hundred wolves," I said. "She's the one who told you to pull the trigger. And she is already planning what to do with you after the wedding."

His smirk slipped.

He glanced at my mother.

She did not look at him.

"You will kneel," my mother said to me, very softly, "because of what I am about to show you."

She lifted two fingers.

Out in the dark below the circle, a man shouted.

It was a muffled sound, and I knew the voice.

I went cold.

"Garrick," I said.

"He has been creeping up the east stair since you walked in," my mother said. "My men caught him on the third step."

Two men in grey cloaks came up out of the dark with Garrick between them.

His arms were wrenched behind him.

One of them held a rifle against the back of his skull.

There was a cut over his eye, and his shirt had torn open across the bandages.

He looked at me, and I saw him decide not to speak.
