Chapter 32: Two in the Morning
My mother spent the next night at Margie's, playing cribbage with the two brothers.
At moonrise, Jet and I went down the forty-one stairs to the flat rock at the bottom of the bluff.
He took off my father's watch and gave it to me to hold.
"I said I'd never take it off," he said.
"I'll give it right back."
I put it in my pocket with the black pearls.
Then we went into the water together.
The pod was waiting in the middle of the cove.
Thirty heads in a ring, under a full July moon, with the white road running straight through them.
Minnow was at the front again.
She'd come down the stairs ahead of us, and she was so excited she was vibrating.
The singing stopped when we reached the ring.
An old gray siren came out of it.
He was the one who'd turned away from the Red Mother first.
His hair was white, and his face was lined.
"Little fish," he said.
I braced myself.
"That was her name for you," he said. "We don't use it anymore."
He looked around the ring.
"Her law was that humans who know about us die," he said. "We've voted on a new one. One human knows. She keeps the cove. She keeps the boats and the nets away, and she listens, and she tells us what's coming. And we keep her."
"Will you?" he said.
I looked at Jet.
He didn't say anything.
He wouldn't, I knew.
It had to be mine.
"Yes," I said. "I've been doing it for free since last summer. I might as well get the title."
Minnow giggled so hard she went under.
Then the old siren nodded, and the whole pod sang.
Not a song I'd ever recorded.
It was short.
Two notes, over and over, from thirty throats.
