Chapter 13: Funnel Cake

Wesley didn't get up off the rug.

He sat back on his heels with the photo in both hands.

I put the envelopes back in the shoebox in the same order I'd found them.

You always put things back the way they were. That's how you keep a placement.

"Leave it," he said.

"She'll know."

"Let her know."

He looked at the photo again.

At the little girl with the bucket.

"How old were you there?"

"Five. Almost six. The bucket was the pigs' supper."

"It's bigger than you."

"It was full, too. You learn to drag it on the dry side, or the mud takes your boots."

He made a sound I didn't have a name for.

Then he set the photo face down on his knee and pressed his palm flat on top of it.

"I have to tell you something," he said. "And I don't want you to say anything after. Okay? Not 'that's fine.' Not 'no charge.' Nothing."

I nodded.

I folded my hands in my lap, waiting for the complaint.

"The festival," he said. "In Lake Geneva. You were three. There was a band, and Mom and Dad were on the blanket, and you wanted to see the ducks."
