Chapter 12: Did I Say You Could
The scrape came at twenty to four.
It was a small sound, iron on iron, and Eli was awake before he knew it had woken him.
The arm across his ribs was gone.
He turned his head on the pillow.
The curtain had a gap in it, and in the gap stood a shape against the alley light.
A hood.
A pair of shoulders.
A hand, spread flat on the outside of the glass, moving slowly along the frame toward the latch.
Eli opened his mouth, and a body hit him from the side.
He was pulled off the bed and onto the floor so fast that the breath left him.
A long arm locked round his chest, and a hand pressed his head down against a warm shoulder.
Simon lay over him, between him and the window, on the rag rug, with every muscle bunched.
"Do not move," Simon said in his ear.
Something rattled the window frame.
Once.
The new latch held.
Then there was the clang of a boot on the fire escape stairs, and another, going down fast.
Then came a long silence, and the far-off bang of the alley gate.
Simon did not let go for a full minute.
"Is he gone?" Eli whispered.
"He is gone."
"You were asleep."
"I was not asleep. I was waiting."
"You were on the other side of me."
"I saw him come up the stairs," Simon said. "I did not tell you. I wanted to reach you first."
Eli lay on the rug with a stranger's weight on him and his heart going.
His anger rose up behind the fear, hot and wonderfully clean.
The detective came in twelve minutes with two patrol officers.
He was a heavy man in a rumpled brown raincoat who did not take off his hat.
He walked the fire escape with a flashlight, bending, and came back in with a plastic bag.
