Chapter 15: Lens
"Get your camera," Eli said.
It was five in the morning, and the bedroom under the eaves of the cedar house was the color of ash.
They had not slept.
Eli sat up against the headboard with the print of the ferry on his knees.
He had been looking at it for six hours.
The man in the green jacket had his face turned toward the water, and he looked, God help him, happy.
"Which camera?" Simon said from the doorway.
"The one you used. All of them."
"I have one with me."
"Then bring it."
Simon was gone for a moment.
He came back with a small black camera and a long lens, held in both hands.
Eli had seen it in his own windows a hundred times, at the edge of a hundred shots, a glint in a parked car.
He had never held it.
"Sit," he said. "There. In the chair, at the foot of the bed."
Simon sat.
The chair was cane, and creaked, and the early light came pale through the window behind him.
"Two hundred and twenty-two photographs," Eli said. "That's what you've taken of me."
"One hundred and ninety-one on the wall. Thirty-one I gave you."
"And I never said yes to one."
"No."
"So this is the first one I'll say yes to."
Eli pushed the quilt off his legs.
He was naked, and the cold air made his skin tighten.
Simon's eyes went over him once and then fixed on his face, because he had been told what to look at.
"Pick it up," he said. "Look through it."
Simon lifted the camera and put his eye to the viewfinder.
