Chapter 23: The Wall Comes Down
The first photograph came down at nine in the morning, and Eli did not look at it.
He peeled the thumbtack out with his nail, and slid the print off the wall, and laid it face down in the box.
Simon stood in the doorway of the photograph room with his arms at his sides.
He had not offered to help.
He had not been told to.
"Don't just watch," Eli said over his shoulder. "Take the other side."
"Which side?"
"The left. Start at the baseboard."
Simon crossed the room, and knelt, and took the first of his own photographs off the wall.
His hand was perfectly steady.
Eli watched it out of the corner of his eye.
He thought it was the bravest thing he had seen anyone do, on the ferry or off it.
They worked for two hours.
The rain had stopped, and a thin winter sun came in at the window and lay across the floorboards.
The wall emptied slowly, in rows.
Eli on the ferry in the green jacket.
Eli at the pharmacy with a box of cold medicine.
Eli asleep on a train, with his mouth open and his head against the glass.
Under each one was a strip of white tape and a line of small upright handwriting.
Slept 3h.
Wore the socks.
Left window open again. Latch fitted.
Eli read every strip.
He did not make a comment.
He found that his eyes stung, and that the sting did not mean what he had expected.
When the last print was in the box, the wall stood bare.
It was pocked from baseboard to ceiling with ten thousand tiny holes.
