Chapter 24: Sleep With the Window Open
"It started with a black umbrella," Eli said.
He lay on his back on the porch daybed, under a heap of quilts, with the rain coming down beyond the screen.
It was ten minutes to midnight on the last night of the year.
Simon lay over him, braced on his forearms, buried deep and quite still.
"Don't move," Eli said. "I'm telling you something."
"I am not moving."
"Listen. Properly. The way you do in the chair."
"I am listening."
"April," said Eli. "A bag on the doormat. A black umbrella, folded, with the tag still on it. And I thought, huh. That's nice."
Simon's breath shook against his cheek.
Eli rolled his hips, once, a slow deliberate lift, and let it settle.
"The next morning it rained," he said.
"Yes."
"I stood at the bus stop under it and looked round at everyone. A woman with a pram. A man with a briefcase. I thought, one of you. And I was kind of flattered."
"You said nothing of that in session."
"You didn't ask the right question."
"I asked a great many."
"You didn't ask if I liked it." Eli smiled up into the lamplight. "Ask me now."
"Did you like it?"
"I loved it," said Eli. "I hated that I loved it. I lay awake every night thinking, what kind of person is flattered by a stalker?"
Simon's forehead dropped onto his.
He did not say anything.
He did not need to, because he had known the answer since the second week of June.
"Move," Eli said, softly. "Slow."
Simon moved.
It was a long, deep, unhurried stroke, and it drew a sigh from the back of Eli's throat.
