I did not sleep.
I sat at my father's desk until the window went grey, with Luc Gaillard's logbook open under the lamp, and I read every page.
Eight years of initials, W. A. P., ran down the right-hand margin like a row of fence posts.
At six I put the book back in the chest, locked it, and put the chest back under its tarp.
Then I put a new lock on the tack room from the hardware drawer, and I drove to the Edisto.
My father is buried on the Marchant land, two miles past the end of the paved road.
His grave sits at the edge of what was once a rice field.
The old dikes are still there, grown over in sweetgrass.
The water stands in the squares of the fields flat and brown, with egrets in it.
The family plot is eleven stones inside an iron fence, and his is the newest.
I stood in front of it with my arms folded in the cold.
"You hid it in my gavel," I said.
The wind moved the grass.
"You let me carry it into a thousand sales and never said. You let that man put a ring on my hand."
