Chapter 16: Forty Phones
Willa's POV
Carter threw his party on a rented barge, forty feet off the end of the Harbor Club pier, and he hired Ben's tug to push it into place.
He had signed that contract a month before the lease fight, and nobody at Linwood Homes had thought to cancel it.
Ben took the job and did not say a word about the lease.
He took me too.
I stood in the tug's galley in a bartender's black vest with my hair pinned up, and a thin woman with a prison pallor handed me a tray.
"Three years, five months," she said. "Cell 12. I never knew your name until Odessa's message."
"You owe her a debt."
"I owe her my daughter's college fund. She never asked a thing." She put a bottle of the Linwood cask on my tray. "Give it to Carter. I'll make sure his glass is never empty."
The barge was strung with lights and crowded with Linwood's friends, sixty of them in linen, all holding drinks.
Daphne stood beside Carter at the rail in a white dress, with her hand on his arm and a smile on her face.
I kept my head down and my tray high.
Nobody looks at the woman with the bottle.
By ten o'clock the barge was riding the swell, and Carter had been poured eleven glasses.
He stood on a crate with a microphone, red-faced and happy.
"To my father," he said. "To the Harlan shoreline, and to everyone who ever believed I'd amount to something!"
The crowd cheered.
Ben came up the gangway from the tug in his work jacket.
