Chapter 8: Credit Received
Marit's POV
The envelope came on Wednesday with the morning mail, and I read it standing in the front hall in my socks.
It was from the loan servicer.
It said they had received a payment of eighteen thousand dollars on the account.
It said the sender was J. Virtanen.
I read it three times.
Then I put on my boots and drove to the dock.
The fleet was in, because the crab season had been delayed again.
The boats lay hull to hull along the piling with their pots stacked high on deck.
Men in orange bibs coiled line and hauled bait.
Jussi stood on the stern of the Ingrid Marie with a bucket in his hand.
His sleeves were pushed up, and he was singing something Finnish and cheerful.
He saw me and stopped singing.
"Mari," he said.
"Hi. Wow. Hi."
"Come up here," I said.
"Off your boat."
He came up the ladder to the dock.
He saw the paper in my hand, and all the color went out of his face under the sunburn.
