Chapter 20: Unfit
"Stay here," I said to Orsola.
She looked at me over her glasses.
"In a closet? Again?"
"In a chapel. With the book." I touched her arm. "Nobody sees you before the table."
Orsola looked at the window, and the black mantilla going up the steps.
Then she sat down on the kneeler with her husband's ledger in her lap.
"Go on," she said.
Livio and I came out into the front hall just as the door opened.
Ginevra stopped dead on the mat.
She'd expected me alone.
Then she smiled, and it was a beautiful smile, and she came in with the priest at her elbow.
"Thank God," she said. "Father, this is who I told you about."
There were more cars on the gravel behind her.
Three. Four.
The wives were getting out of them. The oldest one, who'd been coming to my long table since the first Tuesday, and Achille's wife, and five more behind her, in good coats, looking at each other.
"I called them," Ginevra said, before anybody asked. "When the gate told me she was here. I thought she shouldn't be alone."
