I Walked Into My Son's Father's Engagement Party With Our Four-Year-Old, and His Mother Wasn't Surprised novel · Chapter 20 of 24
Chapter 20: Five
Eli turned five on a Saturday in October, and he ran the party like a county clerk.
"The rule is you get invited if you sat with me," he told Rhonda on the cabin lawn, reading from the back of a bingo card. "Grandpa sat with me. You sat with me. Daddy sat in the sandbox."
"I did," Kent said.
"Becca made me laugh at the war council, so she counts."
"I'm honored," Becca said.
She had brought a cooler of sodas, and she'd pulled all the caps off with her teeth before Rhonda caught her.
The lake was blue and cold.
Maple leaves skated across the water, red and orange, and the tin roof of the cabin ticked in the sun.
Kent's father stood at the grill in a clean flannel shirt, turning hot dogs with the care of a man defusing a bomb.
He had moved into the cabin's back bedroom a week ago, and nobody said a word about it.
I carried the plates.
More people kept arriving than I had invited.
The coach came first, gray-bearded and sheepish, with a bag of ice and a bat signed by the whole team.
"For the most questions asked in the Bandits' history," he said.
"It was forty-one," Eli said.
"It's a record."
"Is it going to be broken?"
"Not by me," the coach said.
The caseworker came next.
She wore sneakers, a green sweater and no clipboard.
She held a small bag with her fingers curled.
"I wasn't sure about the etiquette," she said to me. "It's a bottle cap. A Moxie. I found it in my father's garage."
