Chapter 21: Ask Me Again
Forty people held their breath on a cabin lawn, and a squirrel somewhere ran across the tin roof.
Kent knelt in the grass with his father's apron on, holding a ring made out of a bottle cap.
His hand was shaking again.
"I know I'm supposed to say something long," he said. "I practiced it in the truck. It had a part about the lake. I've forgotten all of it."
"Good," I said.
"Carrie Nash..."
"Kent."
He stopped.
I crouched in front of him, so we were eye to eye in the grass, and took the box out of his fingers.
The gold cap caught the light.
Rhonda's nephew had soldered it so carefully that you could still read the tiny bourbon barrel stamped on the crown.
I looked at it for a long moment.
"It's beautiful," I said. "It's the best thing anyone's ever made me."
"Is that a yes?"
"It's a not yet."
Someone behind us said "Oh," very softly.
Kent didn't flinch.
He looked at me with that crooked eyebrow, and the corner of his mouth went up.
"How many yets?" he asked.
"Ask me again in the spring."
"Spring."
"After I've been taken to dinner thirty more times, and you've seen me with the flu, and your first big floor job went wrong, and I've watched you handle it." I closed the box. "I'm not saying no. I said yes once in a lake, with my son kicking me, and I meant it. I'd like to say this one on a day with no cake."
"That's fair."
"I know it's fair. I rehearsed it."
Becca laughed so hard behind me that she had to hold the grill.
