The compliance officer had a mug that said I'D RATHER BE AUDITING, and she did not smile when she slid the complaint across the desk.
My supervisor sat beside her with her hands folded.
I read the letter standing up.
It was typed on cream stationery with a monogram at the top.
As a concerned member of this community, I feel obliged to report that one of your billing clerks, Carrie Nash, a single mother of unstable habits, has been using her position to look into the private affairs of a respectable family.
"Respectable family," I said.
"That's what it says," the officer said.
"Can I have the audit trail?"
She blinked. "For which period?"
"Every chart I've opened since I was hired. Every keystroke."
My supervisor made a small noise that might have been pride.
The officer typed for a full minute.
Then she turned her monitor around.
The list was long and dull, and Joyce Irwin's name wasn't on it.
"Six years," the officer said. "You have never opened that chart, and you don't have access to the surgery wing."
"So I'm cleared."
"You were cleared when I looked it up, Ms. Nash. I wanted to hear what you'd say."
"I said thank you."
"You said 'every keystroke,'" she said. "People who did it don't say that."
I almost laughed.
My supervisor walked me to the elevator.
"She called me too, you know," she said quietly. "Mrs. Irwin. Last Friday, at home. She asked if you were 'stable.'"
