Chapter 23: Kenji's Rules
At five in the morning on the second of January, Kenji sat in the attic's one armchair with a cup of tea, and said, "Sit."
The three of them sat on the edge of the iron bed.
They sat in a row, naked and half asleep, hair standing up in three different ways.
Leif sat on the left, Erik in the middle, and Soren on the right with the quilt around his waist.
Soren had a new bruise on his collarbone that was nobody's fault but his own.
"What's this?" Soren asked.
"Rules."
"We've got rules."
"I've got better ones." Kenji set down the tea. "They leave at seven. We get an hour and a half. I've been watched for ninety-five nights. This morning I'm doing the watching."
Erik's glasses slid down his nose.
"Hands," Kenji said. "Under your thighs. All of you."
Leif looked at him, and then, slowly, tucked both big hands under his legs.
Erik followed, his jaw tight. Soren grinned and followed last, shoulders hunched.
"That's it," Kenji said. "You know how to do this. You did it for ninety-five nights. You can do it for twenty minutes."
