Chapter 8: Erik's Shift
Erik Lunde was not a sentimental person, and he was knitting a scarf at three in the morning.
He did it in the hall chair outside Kenji's bedroom, with the lamp turned down, under the one crooked picture of their mother.
The wool was dark green and had cost him eleven dollars he would never admit to.
Left needle, right needle, knit two, purl two.
The pattern was easy, and his hands needed something to do.
It was his night.
He had taken it from Soren on Friday, in exchange for a week of dishes.
Soren fell asleep in the chair, and Erik did not.
A green notebook lay open on his knee.
He had written the time in it twice already, in his small square engineer's print.
*2:10. Quiet.*
*2:55. Turned over. Quiet.*
He listened to the door.
He had been listening to this door for eleven weeks, and he knew every sound behind it.
The creak of the old sewing-room bed. A sleeper's long breath. The particular sigh Kenji made when he rolled onto his left side.
Tonight there was one more sound.
A man's voice, murmuring, three floors up, and a deeper one answering, and the bump of the iron bed in the attic.
Leif and Soren were up there.
They had said Kenji could come up if he wanted.
Kenji had said he had a paper due and was going to bed, and kissed all three of them goodnight in the hall.
Erik had made a joke about it.
