Chapter 9: The Session File
Roxie's POV
I did not sleep on Saturday night, which is how I ended up at the university recording studio at seven on Sunday morning, holding two coffees and a clipboard.
The studio belongs to the music department, and graduate students are allowed to book it.
I had booked it under the name of a class that doesn't exist.
The engineer was already in the control room, a tired man in a sweater with a mug that said WORLD'S OKAYEST SOUND GUY.
"You're early," he said.
"I brought bribes."
I held out the second coffee, and he took it.
"I need to look at an old session," I said. "From two springs ago. 'Last at the Door.'"
He didn't ask why.
He turned toward the computer, and his shoulders went a little stiff.
I noticed, because I notice things.
I had been noticing Elliott Marlow's hands for four days.
They were big, careful hands, and when I had pressed my palms to his ribs on Friday night, I had felt his heart going.
I had told him it was nerves.
I had known it was not only nerves, because mine had been doing the same thing.
I pushed that thought down and watched the screen.
"I shouldn't show you this," the engineer said.
"I know."
"The label has the master. It's their property now."
"I'm not touching the master. I'm asking about the session."
He rubbed his face.
"It was a Tuesday night," he said. "Brecken came in with a backpack and a guitar and said he had a song. I set up the mics, and he sat down, and he couldn't play it."
