Chapter 16: The Floor
Eli's POV
Bev found me in the supply room at six on Monday morning, with her glasses on their cord and her arms crossed over her chest.
"I'm not supposed to talk to you," she said.
"Who said so?"
"Nobody. I decided it myself. Libby asked for some hours to herself, and I'm a woman who respects a request."
"I'm respecting it."
"I can see that. You look like a coat on a hook."
She took a folded paper out of her pocket and put it into my hand.
It was the board's agenda, the one the nurses weren't supposed to see.
Item four read, Sorensen Pavilion night differential: transfer of discretion to donor.
"Eleven o'clock," Bev said. "Every nurse on the night shift gets a raise because of that money. Your friend's father gets to decide if we keep it, personally, every month, for as long as he likes."
"For as long as he likes."
"That's what discretion means, Doctor."
She looked at me for a moment longer.
"There's a public comment sheet," she said. "Three minutes each. Nobody ever signs it."
She left.
I stood among the saline bags and read the agenda four times.
I knew exactly what I would be giving up, and I did the arithmetic anyway, because I had learned it from the best.
My license, which Estelle had in a drawer.
My job, which the board chair could end with a nod.
The one thing I'd have left, the woman who had asked for time, and who might not come back whatever I did.
I took a pen from the pocket of my coat.
At ten fifty-five I signed the sheet, in handwriting I hadn't used since medical school.
The boardroom was on the ninth floor of the pavilion.
