I Was Billed For Every Minute Of Their Love novel · Chapter 7 of 24

Chapter 7: Forty Seconds

"You followed me," I said.

"I drove past," my father said. "Twice. It's not the same."

He clicked the stopwatch off.

The car door on the other side opened, and my mother got out in her pale-blue coat and her pearls.

Estelle came around the hood with her hands folded and a warm, worried smile.

"Libby, sweetheart, you look thin."

"I've had pasta."

"We just want to talk, darling. Your father was too harsh at the hospital, and I told him so."

"Did you?"

"I did." She touched my sleeve. "We can fix this tonight. You come home, you sleep in your own bed, and we'll waive the fee."

My father cut in without looking up from the stopwatch.

"Provided you stop seeing the doctor."

"Which doctor?"

"The one whose building you just left." He glanced at the fourth-floor window. "He has a habit of leaving things early, Libby. You'd do well to remember it."

I opened my mouth.

Then the front door of the building banged open behind me.

Eli came out in his sweater, with his shoes unlaced and no coat.

He looked like a man who had run down four flights of stairs.

He stopped on the step above me.

For half a second, he looked at my father.

My father looked back with something that was almost amusement.

"Dr. Kearney," my mother said, in the same sweet voice. "You're back in town."
