Chapter 21: What He Signed
Langston's POV
I told my mother first, because she deserved to hear it from me.
She was in the library on Monday morning, in her robe, with her reading glasses pushed up into her silver hair.
I put a copy of the statement on the desk.
She did not touch it.
"You're going to sign that."
"I already did. Last night. This is the copy for you."
"It says you used the power of attorney for three years without her knowledge."
"It does."
"It says you signed her name on a list of documents."
"Forty-one times," I said. "Every single one."
She stood up slowly.
"They can take your license," she said. "They can sue you personally. Cushing's lawyers will be at your door by Friday. You will lose everything your father built."
"He didn't leave us a hotel. He left us a loan, and I nearly lost that too."
"Langston."
"Mom." My voice shook, and I let it. "I've spent my whole life keeping you from being angry at me. I think it's what I'm best at. I am done with it."
She said nothing for a long time.
Outside the window the gardener was raking leaves off the gravel.
"I raised you to be careful," she said at last.
"You raised me to be agreeable."
"It is the same thing."
"It isn't."
She turned her back on me and looked at the wall, where my father's photograph hung in a plain frame.
I kissed the top of her head, which she allowed, and left.
The lawyer's office was above a hardware store in Ellsworth.
It was Flora's lawyer, the one who had served me in the ballroom, and she did not smile when I walked in.
"Mr. Ellery."
"I'd like to file the resignation and the statement with your signature as witness," I said. "And I'd like to give you something."
