Chapter 19: The Sweeper
Nolan's POV
On Monday morning I was sitting on an upturned bucket outside my father's garage, looking at a padlock.
Saturday night I hadn't slept.
I had left the Ashworth drive in Dean's truck with the sound of two hundred people clapping in my ears.
In the mirror I had seen her running down the gravel after me in a wedding gown, holding the skirt in both fists.
I hadn't stopped.
I had told her to ask me again when it cost her something, and I'd meant it, and I hadn't been sure I could live with it.
"Eat," Dean said, and handed me a sandwich the cook had made.
He sat down on the next bucket.
"The whole of Connecticut has watched that ballroom nine hundred thousand times since Saturday," he said. "Preston's lawyer has called every station in the state to ask them to take the video down. Gerald's been sitting in his study since Sunday with the door locked. The board's coming for him at ten."
"And the note?"
"Still his." He nodded at the padlock. "Which means that, as of this morning, the Tierney garage is still closed and I'm still broke."
"I'll find a way."
"You always say that."
A taxi pulled up on the shore road.
I watched it without caring until the door opened and Camille got out.
She wore a pair of cheap jeans and a grey sweatshirt that said LARKMONT HIGH SCHOOL CAFETERIA.
Her hair was in a rubber band.
She carried a cardboard envelope under one arm and nothing else.
"The cook's sister lent me the clothes," she said, before either of us could speak. "I slept on her sofa."
"Camille," I said.
"I'm not here for you. Not yet." She turned to my brother. "Mr. Tierney. I'd like to talk to you."
Dean folded his arms.
"Go ahead."
She opened the envelope and took out a cashier's cheque.
