Chapter 7: The Diner
The second night, she didn't offer tea.
She stood at the window in a dark blue dress with her arms folded and her back to me.
"Tell it," she said.
I shut the door behind me.
"It was three weeks after the cake," I said. "I'd been to your house twice to look at the Volvo, and your father had me carry in your mother's groceries."
"Who kissed whom?"
"You did."
She turned around.
"I did not."
"You did. It was raining, and you drove down to the garage at nine at night and told me you were hungry."
"I was hungry."
"We went to the diner on the coast road. You ordered blueberry pie, and you ate the whole thing with your fork in one hand and my hand in your other, under the table."
"Why?"
"Because you said the booth was cold."
"And then?"
"I walked you to your car. You stood in the rain and said, 'Nolan Tierney, I've been waiting three weeks for you to do something about this.'"
Camille's mouth twitched.
"That sounds like me."
"It sounded exactly like you."
"And did you?"
"Do something? You didn't give me time."
She crossed the room slowly in her bare feet.
She stopped in front of me and looked up.
"Show me," she said.
"You said no touching."
"I said I'd say when."
"Are you saying?"
"I'm saying show me how it happened."
I put one hand on her cheek.
Her skin was warm, and I felt her breathe in.
"You came up like this," I said, "with your chin tilted, and you said my whole name, and you put both hands in my shirt."
