Chapter 22: Council
"Yes," I said.
He blinked.
"You don't want to think about it?"
"I thought about it in October. You came back and asked instead of telling. That's the difference."
The council chamber at City Hall was a concrete bowl with orange seats and a ceiling.
It was full by six.
Men in Prendergast Builders jackets filled the back three rows, the crew who'd built my kennel runs among them. One of them lifted his hand to me.
Union guys. Neighbors from the school site with signs. A row of parents.
The reporter sat in the front row with her notebook already open.
Niall's mother sat four seats from the aisle in her pearls, her hands folded, looking at nobody.
And on the far side, by the ramp, Kiera.
Her lawyer beside her. A white coat. Her hair perfect.
Her name was on the public comment list. I'd seen it on the clipboard at the door, three lines under Brendan's.
She saw me come in with the Prendergast brothers.
She smiled and looked away.
The school contract came up at seven twenty.
