Chapter 18: Not Yet
"Not yet," I said.
He nodded slowly.
He didn't look away.
"Can you tell me why?"
I'd had two years to think about why.
I'd never once been asked.
"Because for two years you chose a ghost over me," I said. "Every day. Not once. Every day."
He took it without a word.
"Every October you stood up in a ballroom and told three hundred people she was your everything. I was in the front row."
"I know."
"Every time I walked past that blue door, I knew there was a room in my house I wasn't good enough to open."
I kept my voice level.
"You never once noticed I'd stopped calling."
"Rue..."
"I'm not done."
He shut his mouth.
"You were good to me on the roof. You were good to me at the courthouse. Then you brought me here and you left."
The harbor was dark and flat below us.
"Tonight you emptied her room. I know what that cost. I watched you count the trips."
I took a breath.
"But you did it on the worst night of your life. People do all kinds of things on the worst night of their lives."
