Chapter 28: On the Dais
"My name is Rue Dabney Kershaw," I said. "I'm the bartender."
"For two years I lived on a five-hundred-dollar card. I paid my doctor in cash out of my tips. I sold my car."
The room was quiet now.
"Everything my husband sent his wife went to a card in Nassau. And the name on that card was Mariel Kershaw."
I looked up at the booth at the back of the room.
I nodded.
The big screen over the dais went dark.
Then it lit up blue.
The marina in Nassau, shaky and wide, from the fuel dock.
The same sloop, the same woman, her voice coming out of the ballroom speakers, bright and lazy.
"I'm nobody's wife now."
The date sat in the corner of the screen.
Two weeks before she landed in a wheelchair with no memory.
On the screen she lifted her face to the camera and laughed.
"Wave to Charleston for me."
Three hundred people turned to look at the woman in white silk on the dais.
Mariel sat very still.
Then she put her hand to her chest.
"I don't know who that is," she said, in her small lost voice. "I'm sorry. I don't."
