Chapter 16: Jory
Jory found her on the dome ridge at noon, sitting on a rusted girder with her boots hanging over the drop.
He landed beside her in a flurry of red-brown feathers and became a boy again, grinning and out of breath.
"You're not supposed to be up here," he said. "The plates are loose."
"Then why are you?"
"I'm a hawk. I'm supposed to be up here."
He sat down close enough that their shoulders touched.
Behind his left ear, a neat line of black stitches showed where Isak had cut the dead implant out that morning.
He kept touching it.
"It itches," he said.
"It's healing."
"I know. It's the first thing that's healed on me in four years."
Through the gaps in the dome, the real sky showed in slivers, deep blue going to violet.
The Marshal's fleet was gone, and so was the relay.
The silence on the ridge was the loudest she had heard on Ghostfall.
"Can I tell you something?" Jory said. "Everyone else tells you things in nice sentences."
"Go ahead."
"I'm twenty-two. I was eighteen at Kell Reach. They're all older than me, and they've been protecting me ever since."
"I don't want to be protected, Maxine. I want to be next to you."
