Chapter 23: The Kitchen Empire

"The Union has four hundred ship-graveyards," the Speaker said, "and more than two million people living in their shadows on Court ration paste."

"We would like you to feed them."

She said it in front of the whole table, with Alden at the end of it, and the six beds of black earth behind.

Maxine laid down her spoon.

"Under what terms?"

"The Assembly's. A charter and a budget."

"No. Mine." Maxine looked down the table at seven faces.

"The kitchens are mine, and the Union buys the food and stays out of my pots."

"Nobody is studied. Nobody is housed anywhere they didn't choose. And every one of my husbands decides his own part."

"Done," said the Speaker, so fast that Silvan wrote it in his ledger before she could change her mind.

The first Graveyard Kitchen opened a week later, on a cold moon the maps called Hull-Nine.

It was a hangar with a long steel counter, a patched roof, and a line outside that wrapped twice around the block.

Maxine stood behind the pass in a clean apron, with her left palm warming the biggest pot she had ever seen.

Bram had built the stoves.

Isak ran a medical table in the corner, with a queue of his own.

Lucan was stealing every sweet roll in sight to give to the children, and nobody was stopping him.

An old woman at the front of the line held out a tin cup with trembling hands.
