Chapter 13: The Boathouse
The lodge boathouse stood at the end of a long dock, dark except for one lamp swinging over the door.
Rhys had wanted to come with me.
I told him Whitney had said alone, and he sat in the truck at the top of the road with the lights off.
"Twenty minutes," he said. "Then I'm walking down."
"Fine."
The dock boards were slick with rain.
Whitney stood inside the boathouse in a rain jacket, hugging herself, with her phone in her hand.
"You came," she said.
"You said you'd give me the video."
"I said I wanted out." She wiped her nose with her wrist. "Those are different."
"Whitney."
"Do you know what Constance said to me at your engagement dinner? She said, 'You've been so useful, dear. Gavin needs someone who can drive.'"
She laughed, and it hurt to hear.
"I was twenty when I got in that car. I've been the driver ever since. Eight years of it. And she still put a fake ring on your hand and a real one on a chain around my neck, and I still wasn't family."
"You wore my mother's veil."
"I know."
"You kissed my fiancé in front of me."
"I know." Her face crumpled. "I wanted to see if anyone would stop us. Nobody ever stops us."
I held out my hand.
Whitney looked at it for a long time.
Then she unlocked her phone and turned it toward me.
The video was dark and shaky, with a dashboard glowing green.
Rain on the windshield.
A man's voice, slurred and high, saying, "Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God."
The picture swung to the driver's seat.
Gavin sat there with both hands locked on the wheel and his face wet.
I knew that face.
It was eight years younger, and it was the face of the man who had killed my brother.
Then a second pair of hands came into the frame, big and steady, and reached across Gavin's chest for the belt.
