Chapter 10: The Question
I dressed faster than I ever had in my life.
Kjell was already at the door, shirt buttoned wrong, hair still wet from the basin.
He caught my hand on the stair.
"Whatever it says," he began.
"Later," I said, and squeezed once, and we went down together.
The rider stood in the middle of the long hall with snow melting off his boots.
He was one of my father's guards, a man I had known for years, and he would not meet my eyes.
Half the Hold had gathered to watch.
Bram stood beside the high table with his arms crossed and a black scowl.
"Read it," Kjell said.
The rider unrolled the paper, cleared his throat, and began to read in a flat voice.
"To the Alpha of Frostmark and to my daughter Solveig Sandiford. By the old law of the pack, a trial wolf may be recalled by her Alpha at any time before her term is sealed. I recall her. She is to ride home with the bearer at once."
The hall stirred.
"There's more," the rider said, unhappily.
"Go on," I said.
"My younger daughter, Asta, is also recalled from the Academy. If either is not returned within ten days, Silverbrook will treat the Hold as holding two of its wolves against their will, and the pack will answer accordingly."
He lowered the paper.
"That's a threat of war," Bram said.
"It's a bluff," said the girl from Silverbrook, from the back of the room. "Silverbrook couldn't take a barn."
"Is it true?" I asked Kjell.
"That a trial wolf can be recalled?" He kept his eyes on the rider. "Yes. It is the oldest clause of the old law. I wrote the second half of it myself, after the third winter."
