Chapter 20: Fire

Tae-gyeom was on his feet before Ji-an had finished breathing in.

He had his phone at his ear. "Gas. Now. Where are you?"

She heard a man's voice shouting on the other end, and behind it, a lot of other men shouting.

"A fight at the bottom of the stairs," Tae-gyeom said, already moving. "Twenty of them. Drunk, or pretending. My people went down to stop it."

"They're pulling them off the hill."

"Yes." He was at the door. "Get my mother. Get out through the shop. Don't come into the yard."

He went out into the dark.

Ji-an ran down the hall in her socks and hammered on Ok-ja's door.

"Eomeoni! Get up!"

Ok-ja opened it in her flowered nightdress with her reading glasses already on.

"I smell it," she said. "Those bastards."

The gas smell was thick now. It was coming from both sides at once.

From the empty houses. The ones with the red X's, on either side of her wall.

Ji-an grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the front room and the shop door.

Then the house on the left went up.

There was no bang. Just a deep soft whump, and the window of the front room turned orange.
