Chapter 16: The Water Gate
Lin was dressing before Wen Lanxi finished speaking.
"Cen has the Throne Hall," said Wen Lanxi, "and the palace guard, and your father's body.
The chamberlain says a pillow, though he says it very quietly.
Sixty men are coming to the Orchid Court now.
They have orders for you, Highness, and for the consort."
"Orders," Jiang said.
"What kind?"
Wen Lanxi did not answer.
That was the answer.
"The water gate," said Lin.
"Lanxi, the key."
"On my belt.
Go.
I'll hold the stair."
Jiang took the Yan bow and every arrow Du Heng had left on the rack.
They went out through the back of the court by the frozen pond.
The snow came down thick enough to hide their footprints, and the shouts of the guards were already loud at the moon gate.
Six men found them in the kitchen yard.
They came through the arch in crimson with swords out.
Jiang shot the first through the thigh and the second through the sleeve that held his torch.
The yard went dark.
He heard Lin's breath beside him, steady and quick.
"Left," Lin said.
"Down the coal steps."
They ran.
At the bottom of the steps a heavy door stood half open, and a guard who had circled round came out of it swinging.
Lin took the blow meant for Jiang.
The hilt struck his left shoulder, the bad one, and Jiang heard him cry out and saw his arm go wrong in the lamplight.
