Chapter 23: The Tribute's Terms
The envoy of Yan wore white, because his emperor had sent condolences, and black marten at the collar, because his emperor had sent him anyway.
He was not the thin man from the ford.
He was older, soft-faced and slow, with a chancellor's seal at his belt.
He came into the audience hall at dawn with twenty Yan riders and bowed to the regent exactly as low as the treaty required.
Both courts were there.
The Liang Council stood in black along the left wall, and on the right the Yan delegation held its ground in grey and fur.
Jiang stood at the foot of the dais in the dark Liang robe of a minister.
Du Heng stood behind him, and Jiang's hair had grown a finger of black on his skull.
"Regent of Liang," said the chancellor.
"The Treaty of Stone Ford gave the General Jiang Zhanyuan to your house to be held until the wound was answered.
The wound has been answered.
My emperor claims what is his."
Lin sat on the regent's low chair with his hands on his knees.
He looked at Jiang and not at the chancellor.
