Chapter 10: Tomorrow

Keith's flat was on the third floor of a brownstone, with books stacked on the radiator and one good lamp.

He opened the door before I knocked.

"You're early."

"I'm exactly on time. You were waiting."

"I was waiting," he agreed.

I walked in past him and set my bag on a chair, and I took off my cardigan and laid it over the back.

I heard the door close and the lock turn.

"Rules," I said, without turning around.

"His name stays out of the room."

"Good memory."

"I've had it on a loop since Thursday."

I turned and looked at him.

He stood a few feet away, in a soft gray sweater with the sleeves pushed up, his big hands open at his sides.

He was doing the thing again.

"Keith," I said. "Don't just watch."

He crossed the room in three steps.

His mouth came down on mine, and this time there was no rain and no steering wheel and nobody to interrupt us.

He kissed me until my back met the wall.

I felt every inch of him pressed against me, solid and warm and shaking a little.

"Bedroom," he said into my neck.

"Here first."

I pulled his sweater up and he got it over his head, and I put both hands flat on his bare chest.

He was broad, and his skin was hot, and a scatter of dark blond hair ran down to his belt.

I kissed the center of his chest, and a low shudder went through him.

"Nessa."

"I've wanted to do this since the day you walked in with that terrible tie."

"It was a good tie."

"It was a crime."

He laughed, and then I opened his belt, and he stopped laughing.

I dropped to my knees on his rug and looked up at him.

His eyes were dark, and his throat moved.

"Nessa," he said, rough.

"I'm in charge tonight," I said.
