Chapter 15: Edmar's Cost
The Abbey tower stood at the north end of the palace gardens, a round grey stub of stone with one door.
I reached it at a run, with Daveth beside me and the Dowager's footman puffing behind.
The door was open.
Two Sisters in grey habits stood on the step with the empty key ring between them.
They looked as though they had been robbed by a polite thief.
"He took them," one said. "He asked first, Majesty. He said please."
I took the stairs two at a time.
They wound up inside the wall in the dark, and the air smelled of old stone and cold ash.
On the third landing a lantern burned on the floor.
Edmar was kneeling beside it.
He had gone down on both knees on the bare flags, in his good coat, in front of an open iron door.
I stopped on the step below and put a hand against the wall.
Beyond the door was a room with a narrow bed, a table, a shelf of books and a window the width of a hand.
Two women sat in it.
