Chapter 5: Dane's Number

My condo was on the ground floor, which was the only reason I could get inside it.

It smelled shut up and stale, because I hadn't lived there for two years.

I had moved in with Derrick after he proposed, and I had kept the lease on this place out of habit.

On Sunday morning I sat on the couch with my leg on a pillow and the stove clock blinking the wrong time.

Someone knocked.

I looked through the peephole and found my brother holding two grocery bags.

I opened the door because I couldn't think of a reason not to.

"I figured you didn't have food," Dane said.

"I don't."

He came in sideways, careful of the crutches against the wall, and put the bags on the counter.

He unpacked everything one item at a time. Bread, eggs, the brand of peanut butter I had eaten since I was nine.

He didn't look at me.

"You don't need to do this," I said.

"Yeah, I do."

"Then do it quietly, because I have a question and you won't like it."

He put a carton of milk in the fridge and shut the door.

"Okay."

I took out my phone and set it on the arm of the couch on speaker.

"I called the hospital this morning," I said. "The nurse from Wednesday gave me a number to ask for. I'm going to ask the same question again with you here."

"Abby, what is this?"

"Sit down, Dane."

He sat on the edge of the coffee table.
