Chapter 20: Breakup

I had told my brother I would think about it, and I had thought of nothing else for three weeks.

The ice went out of the lake on a Saturday in April with a groan we heard in the kitchen, and Petroc took me underground.

We had slept in his bed since St. Urho's night, and I had not said a word to him about the lamp.

He knew why.

He had not asked.

The old Crown No. 4 drift opened off the foot of the shaft house through a door of black timber.

It ran back into the hill.

Thaw water ran down the walls in threads.

He wore a miner's lamp strapped to his head.

The beam found cold rock, rusted rails, and the little arched niche cut into the stone where a miner once set his candle.

"Nobody's been down here since I was fifteen," he said.

"Why did you bring me?"

"Because nobody can find us."

I took the lamp off his head and set it in the niche, and the rock around us went gold.

I put my back against the wall and looked at him.

Water dripped somewhere.

A long clear icicle hung from the roof of the drift above his shoulder, thick as my wrist and pointed.

I reached up and snapped it off.

"Cold," he said.

"Take off your coat."

I heard it as it left my mouth.

"I mean I'd like you to," I said, "if you want."

His mouth twitched, and he peeled off his coat and his flannel shirt and laid the coat on the stone floor.

His chest was bare and broad in the lamplight, and the scar showed white along his arm.

I laid the point of the icicle against the hollow of his throat and drew it slowly down.

He sucked in a breath.

The ice left a bright wet line down his breastbone and across his stomach, and the muscles jumped under it.

His nipples went tight.

I circled one with the ice, and he hissed.

"You're enjoying this," he said.

"So are you."

I let the ice run lower, along the waist of his jeans.

His cock pressed hard against the denim, and I traced the shape of it with the cold tip.
