Chapter 4: Two Days

The healer took my pouch of dried wolfsbane the next morning, and he was polite about it.

"Orders," he said, tipping the brown leaves into a jar. "I'm sorry. It will itch for a few days when it clears."

"How many days?"

"Three from your last dose. Two left now."

I nodded and thanked him.

I had two days to find what I needed before his nose found me.

The housekeeper sent me to dust the King's study at noon.

"He's at the Council in the lower hall until supper," she said. "Don't read anything."

"I can't read," I said.

She snorted.

"Then you'll have an easy day."

The study was a long room of dark wood with a fire laid and a map of the kingdom across one wall.

I closed the door behind me and stood with my back to it.

I had never been in this room.

I had never been in any of his rooms.

It smelled of him, and of old paper, and I put my cloth to the shelf and began to work my way toward the desk.

The top drawer was not locked.

Under a stack of letters I found a leather folder tied with a cord, and the cord was already undone.

Inside, in a long black hand, lay the treaty.

My father's signature was at the bottom, and I knew every stroke of it.

The pass was ceded to the Crown, it said, in exchange for the Crown's protection of the Ironcrest Pack and the marriage of the Alpha's daughter to the King.

I read that last part three times.

The marriage of the Alpha's daughter.

I had known it, but it was different to see it on paper, with me as a clause.

Behind the treaty was a single sheet in the same black hand.
