Chapter 13: Paid in Full
I didn't tell Una.
She was still dancing with a broom in the back room, singing something with no tune.
I folded the receipt into my pocket and asked her to watch Nessa for an hour.
"Take two," she said. "Take ten. I own a shop."
The Anchor sat on West Broadway under a green sign with a gold anchor on it.
I had been inside it once in this life, at fifteen, to bring the old man a coat he'd forgotten.
In my other life I'd been inside it once a year, on my anniversary, so his men could laugh.
It was four in the afternoon on a Saturday.
The Red Sox were on the television over the bar. A dozen men sat on stools with their sleeves rolled up.
Every one of them stopped talking when I came in.
Cormac was at the far end with a ledger open and his reading glasses on.
I hadn't known he wore reading glasses.
In five years of marriage, I never once saw him read.
He took them off when he saw me.
I walked the length of the bar.
Nobody said "rat's daughter." I watched them want to.
I took the receipt out of my pocket, unfolded it and slapped it flat on the wood in front of him.
"D. Holdings," I said.
He looked at it.
He didn't pretend.
"Yes."
"You paid Una's rent."
"Yes."
"Behind my back."
"Yes."
The bartender very slowly turned the television down.
"You decided my life without me," I said. "Again. You looked at my friend and my job and my roof, and you decided what happens to them. Do you know what that's called?"
"I know what it's called."
"Say it."
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he stood up, so his men could see him clearly.
"She's right," he said to the room. "I went around her. I had no business doing it."
