Chapter 15: Fitting

The bride stopped crying.

She looked from Philomena to me, with her hands still half raised toward the lace.

Her mother had gone pink. She wouldn't meet my eyes.

Una came out of the back room with a pincushion strapped to her wrist and stopped in the doorway.

"Well, well," she said. "The stairs lady."

Philomena didn't look at her.

"I'm only saying what everyone in Southie knows," she said to the bride. "A girl who'd do that to a family that raised her. Imagine what she'd do to a stranger."

I put down my pins.

In my first life, I'd have said sorry. I'd have said it to the floor.

I'd been saying sorry to Philomena Devane since I was fifteen years old.

"It's true," I said to the bride. "I walked out of that church."

The girl's mouth opened.

"I walked out because the man at the altar didn't love me. He didn't even look at me. Everybody in that church knew it, and nobody said a word, because his name was Devane."

Philomena's gloved hand tightened on her purse.

"Does yours love you?" I asked the bride.

She didn't even have to think.

"He cried when I said yes," she said. "In the Olive Garden. The waiter brought him napkins."

"Then I'll walk you into that church like a queen."

I unpinned the dress from the form and held it up so the light went through the sleeves.

"Ten days. You'll have it in eight. Try it on."

Nobody moved.

Then the bride kicked off her shoes.

She went behind the curtain with the dress over her arm, and I followed her in to do up the back.

Through the curtain I heard Una.

"Can I get you a coffee, Mrs. Devane? We do a lovely coffee. It's got a little bit of everything in it."

"I don't think so."

"Suit yourself. The door's where you left it."
