He walked away up Broadway in the snow.

I watched him go to the corner.

He didn't look back, and I knew he wouldn't, and I stood there anyway until Nessa pulled my hand.

"I'm cold. I'm a cold lighthouse."

"Home," I said.

Thirteen days.

I packed my mother's machine in a crate Una built out of a pallet.

I packed the toolbox, empty now under its false bottom.

I packed the pizza calendar with OUT BY SPRING across June.

Nessa packed her own suitcase four times. Each time it held only the rabbit, the blue sewing box and the handprint turkey.

"Clothes," I said.

"They have clothes in New Hampshire."

On the eighteenth, I took her to Southie to say goodbye to her grandmother.

Philomena's sister let us into a narrow front room full of china dogs.

Philomena sat by the window in a cardigan. No pearls. No gloves.

She looked older than the old man had looked in his bed.

She stood up when we came in, and then she didn't know what to do with her hands.

Nessa stayed against my leg.

"Hi, Grandma."

"Hello, darling."

"We're going to Portsmouth. There's tugboats."

"I heard."

"You can't come," Nessa said. "Orla didn't say."
