Chapter 31: New Year

By the time I got to the living room, she was already on top of him.

She'd landed on his stomach from the arm of the couch. He was curled around her, laughing.

"You came! You came for Christmas! Orla, he came!"

"I see that."

"Did you know?"

"I went and got him."

Nessa looked at me with her mouth open.

Then she looked at the table, at the fourth plate.

"I told you," she said. "I told you he'd need a fork."

Una came out of my bedroom in a dressing gown with her hair standing straight up.

She looked at Cormac on the couch with a child on his chest.

She looked at me.

"Well," she said. "Somebody put the kettle on before I say something nice."

It was the best Christmas of my life.

We ate Una's ham at noon in our pajamas.

Nessa wore Una's present, a pirate hat made from a dress pattern, and refused to take it off.

Cormac had brought nothing, because he hadn't known he was coming.

So he fixed things.

He fixed the kitchen drawer that stuck.

He fixed the shop's back door, which swelled shut in the cold. He fixed the hinge on Nessa's blue sewing box.

"You're not a present," Nessa told him. "You're a fixer."

"Is that better or worse?"
