I stood behind the tree with the daffodils until my hands were cold.

Then I made some noise on the path, scuffing my shoes.

He stood up and brushed off his knees.

He didn't look like a man who'd been caught at anything.

I put the flowers in the metal cup on my parents' stone. Yellow on my mother's side. Purple on my father's.

"What did he say?" I asked.

Cormac looked at the stone.

"He's thinking about it," he said.

I laughed so hard I had to hold on to the stone.

I didn't tell him I'd heard.

For three weeks I waited.

He didn't say anything. He didn't do anything.

He fixed engines. He opened the bricked-up fireplace over three weekends, the way the boatyard man had said, and it drew on the first try.

He did his community service on Saturday mornings at a food pantry, stacking cans. He came home and told Nessa which cans were the heaviest.

He walked her to school every day.

She let him hold her hand all the way to the gate and not one step past it.

I started to think I'd heard wrong.
