I Woke Up at the Altar and Said No to the Mob Heir Who Let Me Die, but He Remembers Too novel · Chapter 7 of 40

Chapter 7: The Question

"Ask," I said.

Nessa was knocking on the car window from inside, making faces at us.

Cormac waved at her without smiling. Then he turned his back to the car so she couldn't read his face.

"My brother's will made me her guardian. Not my mother. Me."

"I know."

"I can sign that over. To anyone I choose."

I took a step back.

"No."

"You haven't heard it."

"I don't need to. You want me back in that house. You want to use her to do it."

"I want her out of that house." His voice dropped. "Out of it, Orla. Out of Milton, out of the Anchor, out of the family. I want her to grow up somewhere nobody's ever heard the name Devane."

A bus went by and blew my hair across my face.

"In the other life she went to that school," he said. "She came home at sixteen and didn't speak to my mother for a year. She didn't speak to me at all."

"You deserved that."

"I did." He didn't flinch. "She didn't."

I looked at the car. Nessa had her rabbit pressed to the glass, making it wave.

"Why me?"

"Because you're the only person she's ever run after."

He took a folded paper from his coat and held it out.

I didn't take it.

"It's what a lawyer drew up," he said. "Guardianship goes to you. Her money goes into a trust you control. My brother left her plenty. You'd never need a dollar from me."

"And you?"

"I see her when you say I can. If you never say it, I never see her."

"You'd give her up."

"I'd give her to you."

I said nothing.

"You can say no," he said. "I meant that."

"I need to think."

"Take whatever you need. My mother's booked the school for the second week of September."

He set the paper on the hood of the car and walked around to the driver's door.
